Sinus Infection Self Help

Sinus infections are one of the most commonly occurring bacterial infections. Although rarely debilitating, they can cause headaches, congestion, shortness of breath and fatigue. You should see a doctor if you contract a sinus infection; however, in the meantime, there are some self-help treatments you can administer.
  1. Steam

    • One way to relieve congestion and sinus pressure is to inhale steam. Fill a bowl with hot water, place a towel over your head and bend over the bowl. Then inhale and allow the steam to enter your sinus passages. Do this for two to three minutes.

    Garlic

    • Garlic has both anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties, both of which can attack the root cause of a sinus infection. Garlic juice or garlic tablets are your best option for helping ward off a sinus infection. These products can be purchased at your local health food or nutritional supplement store. If these are not available, try steeping chopped fresh garlic in a bowl of hot water and inhaling the garlic-laced steam several times a day.

    Apple Cider Vinegar

    • Apple Cider Vinegar is high in potassium, which can help reduce mucus production that can cause congestion during the course of a sinus infection. Mix 2 tbsp. vinegar in a glass of warm water and drink it three times daily.

    Neti Pot

    • A neti pot is sinus-cleaning apparatus that has been shown to help clear the sinus passages of mucus and cure sinus infections. Purchase a neti pot and fill it with lukewarm water. Add 1/4 tsp. salt. Insert the spout of the pot into one nostril and gently begin to pour. This will irrigate the nasal passages, washing them of blockages, foreign particles and mucus. Do this on a daily basis to help cure a sinus infection, and continue to do so regularly to help prevent recurrence.
