Anucort Side Effects

Anucort is a hydrocortisone suppository used to reduce inflammation caused by hemorrhoids and swelling in the rectal area. The medication is also used in the treatment of ulcerative colitis, proctitis and other conditions of the anus and rectal region. As with most suppositories, there are a number of side effects associated with its use.
  1. Common Side Effects

    • As mentioned, there are certain side effects associated with using this medication. Some side effects include mild pain or burning in the rectal area, changes in menstrual cycles, acne, increased perspiration and increased facial and body hair growth. While these are considered the most common side effects associated with using Anucort, they only affect a small number of users.

    Severe Side Effects

    • Unfortunately, there are also a number of severe side effects associated with using Anucort. Side effects include shortness of breath, muscle weakness, inflammation in the ankles and feet, rapid weight gain, severe anal pain and burning, bleeding from the rectum, sudden headache, severe stomach pain and seizures. Important Safety Information

    • Before using this medication, consult with your doctor if you suffer from congestive heart failure, stomach ulcers, if you have recently had a colostomy or ileostomy, kidney disease, high blood pressure, tuberculosis or myasthenia gravis. If you suffer from any of these conditions, you may not be able to use Anucort or any other type of hydrocortisone cream.

    Usage

    • Always use this medication exactly as it was prescribed by your doctor and never in amounts that exceed the dosage instructions written on the label.
