Sinus Cavity Infections

Each year, thousands of people experience infections of the sinus cavity, a condition more often referred to as sinusitis. Knowing the signs of a sinus infection can help the treatment of the painful condition move along more rapidly.
  1. Infection

    • Sinuses work in the nasal air and membrane system, which produces mucus. This mucus passes through the nose and throat, picking up dust, germs and bacteria. When the defenses of the sinuses become weakened, they begin to allow bacteria and germs to enter them, often becoming infected.

    Symptoms

    • The symptoms of a sinus infection include headaches, painful pressure under the eye area that feels like a headache, runny nose, yellow or very thick mucus. There is usually also a tremendous feeling of pressure in the head that can get worse when the head is upright.

    Causes

    • Most sinus infections are caused by bacterial infections, but they can also be caused by pollutants, allergies and viruses.

    Treatment

    • Because most sinus infections are caused by bacteria, a doctor visit and a prescription for antibiotics is usually required for successful treatment. Some at home remedies that can help manage symptoms include using a hot compress on the infected sinus, drinking hot liquids, resting and keeping the passageways clear by blowing the nose.

    Complications

    • Although it is rare, some cases of sinusitis can extend into brain or eyes, causing damage to those organs. Other complications like bronchitis, chronic cough or asthma can result from the dripping of mucus from the infected sinus.
