Blastocystis Hominis Symptoms

Blastocystis hominis is a microscopic parasite found in a person's stools. It can occur in healthy people as well as people with gastrointestinal disorders. Blastocystis hominis has not been proven to cause infections, but it always should be checked by a doctor.
  1. Diarrhea

    • One of the most frequent symptoms is recurring diarrhea. If you have diarrhea that lasts for more than three days, and feel it is unrelated to any other illness, contact your doctor.

    Bloating

    • Bloating may be a sign of the parasite infecting your body. Along with bloating, you may find that you have excessive flatulence, unrelated to anything you have eaten.

    Cramps

    • When abdominal cramping lasts longer than three days, consult a medical physician, especially if nausea accompanies the cramping.

    Anal Itching

    • The parasite may cause anal itching. The anal itching may lead to rectal bleeding, in which case you should consult a doctor immediately.

    Treatment

    • Unfortunately, many doctors will dismiss the occurrence of Blastocystis hominis, partly because of its rarity and partly because there is no treatment for it. Most doctors will tell you to simply wait for the symptoms to go away without medication.
