Influenza (Flu) Symptoms
The flu can be a nuisance or it can be deadly. One big problem with the flu is trying to determine whether the illness you have is the flu or a common cold because their symptoms are very similar. The flu, however, is much more virulent than the common cold, and much more dangerous. If you suspect you may have the flu it is important to get tested right away. Better yet, getting vaccinated against the flu can help prevent getting sick in the first place.-
Seasonal Human Influenza
-
The common flu, also referred to as Seasonal Influenza, is an illness of the respiratory system. It is caused by a virus and can readily be transmitted from one person to another. While this type of flu is highly contagious, most healthy individuals have at least some immunity to it. A flu vaccine is available to help prevent this type of infection. Typical symptoms of Seasonal Influenza include extreme tiredness, a high fever accompanied by head and body aches, cough, sore throat, runny nose, diarrhea and vomiting.
Swine Flu
-
Of particular concern to many health care professionals is the emergence of the H1N1 strain of the flu virus, frequently referred to as the swine flu. This type of flu had been reported in more than 70 countries worldwide as of June 11, 2009, at which time the World Health Organization declared the virus to be a global pandemic. Symptoms of the H1N1 swine flu are quite similar to those of the common seasonal influenza, particularly fever, lethargy, lack of appetite and coughing. In some cases these symptoms are accompanied by nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, sore throat and a runny or stuffed up nose.
Complications
-
While the flu itself rarely is deadly, these viruses can contribute to serious complications, which can lead to death. Because the influenza virus attacks the respiratory system, bacterial pneumonia can frequently set in. Vomiting, diarrhea and nausea may lead to dehydration. People suffering from certain chronic conditions, including asthma, diabetes or congestive heart failure, may see a worsening of these conditions. Infections of the sinuses and ears are also a frequent complication of the flu.
