What Can Be Done for the Flu?

Nobody enjoys getting the flu. It can be uncomfortable and very exhausting. Since the flu is typically viral, antibiotics are ineffective. With proper treatment, however, feeling better is just a matter of time.
  1. Rest

    • Let your body rest so that it can fight infection. Take time off from work or find someone to watch your children for a few hours each day until you are well.

    Drink Plenty of Liquids

    • Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of liquids when you are ill. Warm liquids are the best medicine when you have the flu. Drink warm chicken or vegetable broth or decaffeinated tea to relieve nasal congestion and help you stay hydrated.

    Gargle

    • If you have a sore throat, gargle with warm salt water a few times a day for some temporary relief.

    Sleep With Extra Pillows

    • Elevate your head at night with extra pillows to keep extra drainage from exiting down your throat. This also can help reduce some of the coughing at night.

    Blow Your Nose

    • Blow your nose whenever you feel "stopped up" or feel mucus draining from your nose. Do not try to sniff it back into your throat and nose. Blow correctly, as well: Close one side of the nostril with a finger while gently blowing out of the other nostril.

    Wash and Disinfect Your Hands

    • Always wash your hands with soap and hot water after blowing your nose, coughing or using the restroom to keep from spreading germs to other loved ones in your household. Dispose of used tissues in a separate bag by your bedside, and empty it every day. Cover coughs by coughing into a sleeve instead of your hands.
