Treatment of Round Worms in Humans
-
Symptoms
-
Signs of a roundworm in a person depends on the type of species that has caused the infection. The symptoms range from blood in the stool to abdominal pain. An itchy rash, diarrhea, fever, a cough, shortness of breath and wheezing can also be a result of a roundworm infection.
Medication
-
Antiparasitic drugs like medendazole (Vermox) and albdendazole (Albenza) may be used to treat a roundworm infection. Other medications that may be prescribed are analgesics, antihistamines, antibiotics and anti-inflammatories. These are meant to either relieve symptoms or to treat a bacterial infection.
Surgery
-
If there is a heavy infestation in the body, surgery may be necessary to get rid of roundworms. Surgery may also be necessary in cases where the worms have obstructed or perforated organs. This can cause organs to die, leading to infection or shock. Appendicitis may also be a complication of an infection.
Dietary Supplements and Nutrition
-
Experts with the University of Maryland Medical Center say many people infected with roundworms are malnourished. A comprehensive diet plan may help treat and prevent roundworms. They suggest eating more bitter or spicy foods, drinking plenty of water, eating less meat and more fish and exercising regularly.
Herbs
-
While no herbs have successfully treated roundworms, experts say they have been proven to increase overall health and that, in turn, can help treat or prevent roundworms.
