How to Recover From Tonsillitis

Tonsillitis is an inflammation of the fleshy part of the sides of the throat due to bacterial or viral infection. Tonsils become red, swollen and painful. White patches will occur in the tonsils and the lymph nodes in your throat may feel swollen. Tonsillitis will usually run its course within 10 days, but in the meantime you will want relief by managing the pain and inflammation.

Instructions

    • 1

Drink lots of liquids. Warm liquids such as broth, tea and soup might feel soothing, or can choose cold liquids and frozen popsicles if cool temperatures feel better on your throat.

    • 2

Use a cool-mist vaporizer when you sleep to help moisten the air and relieve congestion. Cool-mist will help soothe a dry, sore throat.

    • 3

Gargle with warm salt water every three to four hours by adding one teaspoon of salt to eight ounces of warm water. The salt will help reduce any swelling in the tissues.

    • 4

Reduce fever and pain with acetaminophen or ibuprofen. Be sure to follow the package directions or your physician's recommendation.

    • 5

Get plenty of rest. Resting will allow your body more energy to fight off infection.
