Diet for People with Kidney Stones
The University of Virginia Health System reports that once a person has kidney stones, they are more likely to have a recurrence of the stones. A variety of treatments and preventions are available to decrease the likelihood of this. However, dietary changes are often suggested to patients.-
Fluids
-
Fluids are an important part of the diet, and Jackson Siegelbaum Gastroenterology recommends that patients drink one 8-10 oz. glass of water every hour they work. In addition, they should avoid coffees, teas and sodas that contain caffeine.
Oxalate
-
Patients with kidney stones should avoid foods that are high in oxalate, such as beans, beets, some types of berries, some green vegetables, chocolate, spinach and other greens, draft beer, eggplant, instant coffee, nuts, squash, sweet potatoes and tea.
Insoluble Fiber
-
Foods with high insoluble fiber content help prevent kidney stones and include rye, wheat, barley and rice.
Sugar and Sodium
-
Foods that are high in added refined sugar and sodium can contribute to kidney stones and should be avoided.
Calcium
-
Most of the time, calcium is suggested to decrease the recurrence of kidney stones; however, for some stones, calcium can aggravate the condition. Foods high in calcium include milk, cheese, yogurt and sardines.
