Candida Overgrowth Symptoms
Candida (yeast) lives harmlessly in the colons and on the skin of most mammals. However, when the immune system or floral balance of the body becomes disturbed by stress, antibiotics or dietary problems, candida can overgrow and cause a variety of unpleasant symptoms.-
Definition
-
The body is naturally colonized by candida, so the asymptomatic presence of yeast is not the same thing as overgrowth. True candida overgrowth, with noticeable symptoms, is referred to as candiasis.
Vaginitis
-
Candiasis in the vagina is the most common manifestation of yeast overgrowth. It manifests as vaginal irritation and discomfort, as well as curd-like discharge.
Irritable Bowel Syndrome
-
Irritable bowel syndrome responds to treatment using probiotics, "friendly" bacteria that fight yeast. Because of this, it has been hypothesized that IBS may be a form of yeast overgrowth.
Thrush
-
Yeast infections in the mouth, also known as thrush, usually appear in the form of a white, scum-like film on the tongue, possibly extending to the throat, gums and cheeks.
Alternative Theories
-
Dr. William Crook has popularized the notion that mild chronic candida overgrowth may be responsible for weakened immune systems, sugar cravings and other ailments. Chronic candidiasis is not yet fully understood by the medical community.
