Symptomatic Hypoglycemia

Hypoglycemia is when your body has problems with low blood sugar. Hypoglycemia is often associated with diabetes or the onset stages of diabetes, however the Mayo Clinic warns there are other illnesses and conditions that can also result in low blood sugar. If you experience the following symptoms--especially when you've skipped a meal--you might be suffering from hypoglycemia.
  1. Fatigue

    • If there is not enough sugar in your blood, your body does not have a large enough supply of energy. Mild fatigue to sheer exhaustion is symptomatic of hypoglycemia, sometimes accompanied by shaking and weakness.

    Confusion

    • Dr. Zeischegg, MS, DC, DACNB, warns that glucose (sugar) is the only food your brain can use. Like the rest of your body, your brain needs a constant supply of sugar in order to function properly. This is why low blood sugar can result in confusion, erratic behavior, anxiety, and an inability to think clearly.

    Hunger

    • When your body needs energy, it craves fuel. Hypoglycemia is commonly accompanied by hunger. According to Dr. Ronald Hoffman, Hoffman Center Medical Director and host of radio show Health Talk, hypoglycemics often crave food in the form of carbohydrates and sugar.

    Palpitations

    • Heart palpitations may be symptomatic of hypoglycemia, or they may indicate another condition that also causes hypoglycemia. If your low blood sugar spells are accompanied by palpitations, consult your physician for other possible causes.

    Seizures

    • According to the Mayo Clinic, seizures are an uncommon, but they are a more severe symptom of hypoglycemia. Loss of consciousness is also a possible result of low blood sugar. If either occur, immediate medical attention is necessary.
