Liver Damage Symptoms

Liver damage usually occurs gradually. Failure of the liver is a life-threatening situation. The most common causes of liver damage or failure are hepatitis B, hepatitis C, excessive use of alcohol, cirrhosis, malnutrition, an overdose of acetaminophen and reactions to prescribed medications. Poison mushrooms can also cause liver damage.
  1. Initial Symptoms

    • Common initial symptoms include nausea, loss of appetite, diarrhea and tiredness. These symptoms are common for other conditions, so they may not be associated with liver damage.

    Jaundice

    • Live damage usually includes jaundice, which is a yellowing of the skin and the mucous membranes of the eyes and makes urine dark. Jaundice may be the only symptom.

    Cholestasis

    • Cholestasis is the blockage or stoppage of bile flow. The result is jaundice as well as an enlarged spleen and gallbladder. Other symptoms include bone problems, itching and chills.

    Ascites

    • Ascites is the buildup of fluid in the abdominal cavity. The result is a distended abdominal cavity and shortness of breath.

    Other Symptoms

    • Confusion and mental disorientation are symptoms of severe liver problems. Sleepiness occurs and then the patient may go into a coma.
