How to Manage Narcolepsy

Narcolepsy is a condition that is defined as a sleep disorder. Essentially, narcolepsy is characterized by the onset of an uncontrollable desire to sleep. This can lead to the individual falling into a state of sleep in situations that may be inappropriate of even dangerous. Fortunately, there are some methods that can assist a narcoleptic to cope with the condition on an ongoing basis.

Instructions

    • 1

Schedule naps during the day. Even a quick fifteen to thirty minute nap after lunchtime and following the evening meal has proven helpful for many narcoleptics in minimizing the occurrence of sudden sleep during the day.

    • 2

Have some caffeine. While not effective for all persons suffering with narcolepsy, a cup of coffee or black tea can sometimes help to stimulate the system and hold off the sense of impending sleep.

    • 3

Consider the use of antidepressants. With some narcoleptics, the use of Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs) can provide a sense of balance that helps to minimize the onset of a sudden overwhelming desire for sleep.

    • 4

Ask about sleep aids. One of the conundrums of narcolepsy is that while the individual may experience a strong desire to sleep during the day, this does not necessarily make it possible to enjoy a full night of recuperative sleep. When this is the case, a prescription sleep aid may help the narcolepsy sufferer achieve a full night of rest and awake feeling refreshed and less susceptible to sudden periods of sleep during the day.

    • 5

Avoid foods that tend to cause drowsiness during the day, such as starches or food items that are high in simple carbohydrates. The sudden but temporary rise in blood glucose levels could work with the narcolepsy to bring on a period of sleep without little or no warning.

    • 6

Arrange your daily schedule to minimize the impact of narcolepsy. If you tend to experience an outbreak of the condition in the afternoon, schedule important meetings or errands for the morning. Travel with a companion as much when possible. The idea is to take care of key tasks during periods when there is less of a tendency to fall into a state of sleep.
