How to Reduce a Child's Fever

Any parent hates to see their kids under the weather. The natural instinct is to want to get rid of the fever but keep in mind that fever is usually helping the body fight off illness and infection. Fever is also helpful by bringing to a parent's attention that there is a fight going on inside their little one that they might otherwise not have known.

Know the cause. If the cause is something major, like an infection the doctor should be notified immediately.

    • 2

Determine how bad the fever is. If the fever is mild and is not accompanied by any other symptoms it can easily be taken care of at home.

    • 3

Cool the room. Simply keeping the room cool, clothes light and drinking lots of water to stay hydrated is going to be a great start. Remember, you just want to bring the temperature down between 100 and 102 degrees, not eliminate it.

Try over the counter fever reducers. If that does not work, use a fever reducing medication as directed. A popular and effective treatment is to alternate ibuprofen and acetaminophen every four hours. Once the medicine has been started, it is a good time to try a lukewarm bath, too.
