List of Generic Drugs at Walmart

Walmart's pharmacy program offers patients an inexpensive option when they fill prescriptions for medications. The generic drugs from the prescription program are significantly cheaper than their brand-name counterparts. Although not all formulations of every drug on the list are available, physicians are able to write prescriptions for conditions ranging from asthma to mental illness.
  1. Program

    • Generic drugs from Walmart's program are for 30-day and 90-day supplies. As of April 2011, a 30-day supply is $4 and a 90-day supply is $10. The prescription drug list includes new medications; it is recommended to periodically check the list for updates. Standardizing the type of prescribed drugs and dosages keeps costs manageable. The program does not have membership fees or additional hidden fees. All Walmart and Sam's Clubs stores, as well as Neighborhood Market pharmacies, in the United States participate in the pharmacy program.

    Types of Drugs

    • The generic drugs available from the list are prescribed for arthritis, asthma, diabetes, glaucoma, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and mental illness. Albuterol, Lisinopril, Lovastatin, Metformin and Timolol Maleate are just a few. However, this partial list of drugs continues to grow as some over-the-counter drugs are added and generic drug manufacturers take part in the program. Medications on the list are comparable to brand names, but a patient should ask if a generic is an appropriate drug therapy for his condition.

    Exceptions

    • In certain circumstances, generic drugs may cost more than $4 or $10. Prescription prices increase if dosing is higher than the standard; if the prescription is used to treat certain women's health issues; and if the prescription is filled in certain states. An insured person may pay more or less because of the stipulations in her health plan. One example of a higher-priced drug is a 30-day supply of 10 mg Tamoxifen tablets for $9, and a 90-day supply for $24. Prepackaged drugs are only sold in the unit sizes specified on the drug list and cannot be prorated.

    Convenience

    • Each initial paper prescription must be filled in person at the pharmacy or mailed with the proper form. Future prescriptions, from original paper prescriptions, can be delivered to a Walmart pharmacy for free or delivered free to a customer's home. Additionally, home deliveries are restricted to 90-day prescriptions. Once an online account is created, prescriptions can be ordered, managed, refilled and auto-refilled. An online account allows a patient to track an order history or create a medical expense summary that lists pharmacy purchases. The order history and expense summary can be printed for easy reference.
