What causes atrophic rhirtis?
Atrophic rhinitis is a chronic inflammation of the nasal mucosa that leads to atrophy (shrinkage) and scarring of the tissue. The exact cause of atrophic rhinitis is unknown, but it is thought to be caused by a combination of environmental and genetic factors. Some of the factors that are thought to contribute to atrophic rhinitis include:
* Dryness: Atrophic rhinitis is more common in people who live in dry climates. Dryness can irritate the nasal mucosa and make it more susceptible to infection.
* Dust and pollutants: Exposure to dust, fumes, and other pollutants can irritate the nasal mucosa and lead to atrophic rhinitis.
* Smoking: Smoking is a major risk factor for atrophic rhinitis. The chemicals in cigarettes can damage the nasal mucosa and make it more susceptible to infection.
* Allergies: Allergies can cause inflammation of the nasal mucosa and lead to atrophic rhinitis.
* Autoimmune disorders: Some autoimmune disorders, such as Sjögren's syndrome, can cause atrophic rhinitis.
* Genetics: Atrophic rhinitis may also have a genetic component. Some people are more likely to develop atrophic rhinitis if they have a family history of the condition.
