MRSA: Decolonization Protocol
Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a bacterial infection that has become resistant to anti-biotics that are usually used to treat infections. Because of its resistance to the usual drugs used to fight it, a process known as decolonization is needed to treat it.-
Supplies Needed for Decolonization
-
A nasal ointment such as Bactroban (Mupirocin) is required along with clean cotton swabs for applying the ointment in the nasal passages. You will also need an alcohol-based disinfectant rub, several cotton balls, disposable razors and toothbrushes.
The Process of Decolonization
-
The nasal ointment should be applied to the inside of the nostrils three times a day and the infected should also bathe at least three times a day while cleaning any infected areas with the alcohol based cleaner. Any razors or toothbrushes should be discarded safely after each use to avoid spreading the bacteria.
The Benefits of Decolonization
-
Because MRSA is highly resistant to drugs and highly contagious, it is only through careful decolonization and care that there is any real hope of defeating the bacterium. If a steady protocol of making sure all areas are studiously disinfected is followed and all tools are properly disposed of the decolonization protocol can cure an infected patient.
