How to Use a DeVilbiss Nebulizer

A nebulizer is a machine that disperses medication for breathing-related conditions, by turning a liquid into a steam which is inhaled through the mouth. Medications typically dispersed via nebulizer include asthma treatments such as fast-acting or short-term bronchodilators, corticosteriods and in some cases, antibiotics. When inhaled in vapor-form, medication is delivered straight to the lungs for faster relief of symptoms rather than waiting for a pill to dissolve in the bloodstream and take effect. Breathing treatments of this nature are given under the supervision of a physician and all directions should be followed closely.

Instructions

    • 1

Prior to using the nebulizer, all parts must be cleaned thoroughly using hot, soapy water and dried with a lint-free cloth and placed on a level surface within arm's reach, while sitting.

    • 2

With the power turned off, plug the power cord in the electrical outlet. Put one end of the tubing to the air-outlet connection point.

    • 3

Put the baffle, the long cone-shaped cup that regulates the flow of medication, in the nebulizer. While holding the chamber in place, twist the nebulizer cap to secure the two pieces together. Insert the appropriate dosage of medicine through the cap.

    • 4

Connect the other end of the tubing to the nebulizer air connection point. Turn the machine on.

    • 5

With your mouth closed and the mouthpiece held between your teeth, begin breathing deeply and slowing allowing the medication to flow into your lungs. When all medication is gone, turn the power switch off.
