A urinary tract infection can be quite painful. It causes a lot of urgency, painful urination, and even bloody urine. If left untreated, this can become a kidney infection. You may or may not run a fever with a urinary tract infection.

A kidney infection also causes the same symptoms as does a urinary tract infection, except a few more symptoms. These symptoms are usually flank pain in the back, black charcoal colored urine, and nausea and vomiting.
Another thing about a kidney infection is that you will run a high temperature. Urination may also cease completely if not treated quickly. Therefore it is very important to have it treated fast.

Antibiotics are commonly given for a urinary tract infection and kidney infections. In the case of a kidney infection, hospital care may or may not be necessary.
