How Are People Harmed by Pollutants?

Air pollution and water pollution can cause a range of health-related risks, from minor illnesses to cancer. Even indoor air pollution can be dangerous, especially involving harmful gases with poor ventilation. In developing countries with little to no pollution control, clean water is a dire issue.
  1. Respiratory Diseases

    • Air pollution can be carbon dioxide emissions, smoke and chemical pollutants. These can cause bronchitis, asthma-related problems and lung cancer.

    Food Poisoning

    • When heavy metals like mercury are dumped in water, they can contaminate the fish we eat. Mercury poisoning can affect the heart, nervous system and immune system. Unborn babies and young children are the most susceptible.

    Polluted Water

    • Chemically polluted water can cause cancer, genetic disorders and birth defects. Bacteria from polluted water can cause typhoid and diarrheal diseases.

    Indoor Pollution

    • Indoor pollution from glues, sprays and other chemicals can cause eye irritation, headaches, and in more serious cases involving dangerous chemicals and asbestos, cancer.

    Second-Hand Smoke

    • Second-hand smoke is a combination of cigarette, cigar or pipe smoke, along with expelled smoke from a smoker. This can cause lung cancer, nasal sinus cancer and respiratory infections.
