How to Kill Head Louse

Head lice are parasites that suck blood from their victims and spread quickly from person to person. They can be killed with shampoos and sprays, although the Centers for Disease Control says to stop using a lice-killing product immediately if it doesn't work or causes a reaction. It also recommends treating everyone in the house for lice.

Instructions

    • 1

Wash your hair with the lice shampoo, which is sold at drugstores and most department stores. Depending on the type of shampoo, the chemicals might need to stay on your head for up to 10 minutes.

    • 2

      Thoroughly rinse out the shampoo.

    • 3

Have someone run a lice comb to go through all of your hair. The comb's teeth are very close together so that they can remove eggs and nits. Use a paper towel to wipe them off of the comb.

    • 4

Continue using the lice shampoo several times a week for two weeks and have someone check your hair every day. After three days with no eggs or nits, the lice are gone. If the lice are still there, contact a doctor to obtain stronger shampoo.

Wash all blankets, pillows, sheets and towels. Put any toys, stuffed animals or other cloth items into plastic garbage bags. Tie the bags closed and let them sit for at least two weeks to kill any eggs that are on the items.
