Cures for an Itchy Throat
Mild cases usually clear up within a day or two without medicine. If the problem persists, there are cures for an itchy throat that can have you feeling better in no time.
-
Stay Hydrated
-
Sometimes dehydration can lead to a dry, itchy throat. The dryer air during the winter months along with automatic heating systems indoors can aggravate the problem even more. Try to drink plenty of water to remain hydrated and reduce the dry feeling that leads to itching and irritation. Drinking water can be one of the best cures for an itchy throat.
Salt Water Gargle
-
Gargling with warm water and salt is an old-fashioned, tried and true remedy for an itchy throat. Boil about three cups of water with three tablespoons of table salt. Let the water cool down to a warm temperature. Use it to gargle, and repeat the treatment throughout the day as needed.
Vaporizor
-
The moisture from a hot, steam vaporizer can provide instant relief for an itchy throat. It can even prevent the problem from happening--especially while you sleep. If you tend to sleep with your mouth open, you may experience an itching or sore throat when you first wake up in the morning. A hot steam vaporizer will keep your throat and nasal passages moistened.
Ginger
-
Ginger is a soothing remedy for an itchy throat. You can press a piece of freshly peeled ginger root to extract a teaspoon of juice. Mix it with a teaspoon of honey, warm it slightly and swallow the mixture for soothing relief. You can also steep the ginger root in a cup of hot water to make a tea and add a teaspoon of honey and lemon.
Tumeric and Milk
-
Tumeric and milk together is considered an effective itchy-throat cure. Simply boil one cup of milk with one teaspoon of tumeric spice together. Allow it to cool down until it's still warm enough to drink. Drink the milk right before bedtime for at least three nights in a row.
Antihistamines
-
An itchy throat is often a symptom if illness or allergies. There are some over-the-counter medications that can help provide relief. If the itching accompanies other symptoms such as fever, swelling or rash, you should see your doctor. You should also visit your doctor if the itchy feeling persists for five days or more to rule out a serious illness.
