The prostate gland increases its production of prostate-specific antigens (PSA) as men age. While a small amount of this protein is normal in men's blood, a large amount can point to prostate cancer or benign prostate conditions, such as prostatitis. Talk to your doctor about getting a prescription for Proscar or Avodart. Take the medication according to the prescribed dosage. These 5-Alpha-Reductase Inhibitor (5-ARIS) drugs decrease PSA levels. They also help shrink enlarged prostates, prevent urinary retention, prevent future growth of the prostate and reduce the need for future prostate surgery. Be cautious when taking them as they may mask the presence of prostate cancer because they lower PSA levels. They also cause side effects such as erectile dysfunction, lowered libido and reduced semen release during ejaculation.

Avoid any surgical procedure that can irritate or inflame the prostate if at all possible as even minor prostate biopsies can raise PSA levels.

Avoid sexual activity before taking a PSA test since this activity is generally thought to increase PSA levels for up to 48 hours.
