Bacterial Skin Infections in Children

Bacterial skin infections are quite common and can be a very minor infection or can be a deadly infection. Bacteria is the cause of this infection and some are seen in children more than adults. It's important to see a doctor right away to start treatment and prevent the infection from worsening.
  1. Impetigo

    • Impetigo is an infection of the skin's outer layer. This infection is very contagious and generally requires a topical treatment or antibiotic. It is best to get your doctor's opinion as impetigo can easily be mistaken for a different skin condition.

    Scarlet Fever

    • This bacterial skin infection produces a rash. Streptococci, like strep throat, is a general cause of scarlet fever. This infection can easily be spread by an infected child, generally through nose and mouth secretions.

    Scabies

    • Sarcoptes scabei, a parasitic mite, is what causes a scabies infection. Symptoms of scabies include sore, itchy skin and small red bumps, among others. Treatment for scabies is a topical ointment that is to be left on from 8 to 14 hours at a time.

    Staph Infection

    • Staph infection is caused by the bacteria, Staphylococcus aureus. The findings during a physical exam and the pattern of symptoms will determine if it is in fact a Staph infection. Antibiotics are usually the method of treatment prescribed.

    Prevention

    • To lower the risk of your children developing a bacterial skin infection, it is best to incorporate methods of prevention. Depending on the actual infection, such prevention methods might include washing affected area with soap and water frequently, prohibiting any items that can spread infection from being shared and avoiding overcrowded living conditions, among others.
