Scabies Parasite in Children
The human itch mite is the parasite that causes scabies. It is a highly contagious mite that buries itself under the skin and lays eggs. Mites are spread by prolonged touching of another person's skin. Children are at risk for scabies in day care and school.-
Diagnosis
-
A doctor is the only person who is qualified to make a diagnosis by looking at the child's rash. Skin is also taken and examined under a microscope.
Symptoms
-
The main and most bothersome symptom your child may have is itching. Other symptoms include a rash with small pimple-like bumps and crusting of the rash, which indicates severe scabies.
Location
-
The rash commonly appears between the child's fingers and toes, the folds of the arms and the wrist area. However, it can affect other parts of the body as well.
At Risk
-
This parasite is common among children due to their close contact with other children in child-care facilities and schools.
Treatment
-
The entire family needs to be treated. A scabicide cream is used to treat the parasite, and anti-itch medication eases the itching. All clothing and bed linens should be washed in hot water.
