The Side Effects of Cefixime
Cefixime is a prescription medication. It is classified as a cephalosporin antibiotic, and is used for the treatment of bacterial infections, particularly of the throat, urinary tract, ears and chest. The medicine is also often used to treat minor cases of the sexually transmitted disease known as gonorrhea. There are certain side effects that are possible with taking Cefixime.-
Common Side Effects
-
There are several common side effects of Cefixime that are not considered to be severe. These side effects tend to subside rapidly. If you have any of these side effects, however, and find them to be persistent or if they get worse with time, you need to speak with your doctor about the situation. These side effects include stomachache, upset stomach, nausea, gas, diarrhea and loose stools.
Serious Side Effects
-
Serious side effects of Cefixime are uncommon, but possible. If you experience any severe effects of this medicine, you need to immediately seek emergency medical assistance. These side effects could lead to harmful consequences. They are abnormal bleeding or bruising, chills, sore throat, fever, urinating less frequently, the eyes or the skin becoming yellowish in color, vaginal itchiness or discharge, seizures, swollen, blistered, peeling or red skin, white spots appearing inside of the mouth, extreme throwing up or nausea, extreme diarrhea, bloody stools, and severe stomach cramps or stomachache.
Allergic Reactions
-
Serious allergic reactions to Cefixime are rare, but can occasionally occur. These allergic reactions show up in the form of symptoms such as abnormal hoarseness, the tongue, mouth, face or lips becoming swollen, breaking out into hives, itching, chest tightness, and skin rash. If you have any of these signs of allergic reaction, you need to get emergency medical care as soon as possible.
Warnings
-
Cefixime is not an appropriate or safe medication for everybody. Your doctor must be aware of any medical conditions that you might have, as well as your entire medical history (including all allergies and drug interactions that you have experienced), or medicines or dietary supplements you might be taking. If you have ever experienced an allergic reaction to any penicillin or cephalosporin antibiotics, you are advised against taking Cefixime. People with intestinal or stomach diseases such as colitis must be especially careful.
Overdose
-
If you are worried that you might have taken more than the appropriate dosage amount of Cefixime, you need to get emergency medical help as soon as possible. Cefixime overdose can have potentially serious consequences. Some symptoms to look out for include pain of the upper abdomen, throwing up, blood in the urine, nausea and diarrhea.
