Types of TB

TB, short for tuberculosis, is a highly contagious bacterial infection caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis. TB spreads when an infected individual sneezes or coughs and the bacteria enters the air. There are numerous types of TB.

  1. Pulmonary TB

    • Pulmonary TB, the most common type of tuberculosis, typically affects an infected person's lungs. Symptoms of pulmonary TB include coughing up blood, chest pain and pain while breathing.

    Tuberculosis Meningitis

    • Tuburculosis meningitis infects the tissues covering the brain. This life-threatening condition causes fevers, headaches, neck stiffness and comas.

    Tuberculoma

    • Tuberculoma is a type of TB that causes masses to form in the brain. Tuberculoma symptoms include seizures, muscle weakness and headaches.

    Tuberculous Pericarditis

    • Tuberculosus pericarditis infects the pericardium, which is the membrane covering the heart. This type of TB often causes the membrane to thicken, which makes it hard for the heart to pump blood efficiently.

    Intestinal TB

    • Intestinal tuberculosis causes abnormal mass growth in the intestinal tissue. This type of TB is often mistaken for intestinal cancer.

    Miliary TB

    • Military tuberculosis occurs when bacteria enters the bloodstream and spreads throughout the entire body. This life-threatening health condition can cause severe anemia if it enters the bone marrow.
