Symptoms of Mono

Mononucleosis is a type of viral infection caused by the Epstein-Barr virus. It s more commonly known as "mono" or the "kissing disease."
  1. Physical Symptoms

    • Mono causes swelling of the lymph nodes in the groin, armpits or neck.

    Physiological Symptoms

    • Other symptoms of mono are fever, headache, fatigue, chills and sore throat.

    Causes

    • Mono is contracted through saliva. Once a person has been infected with mono, the body forms antibodies that prevent reinfection later in life.

    Prevention

    • A significant preventative measure is to avoid activities that carry a risk of coming in contact with others' saliva, such as drinking from water fountains, sharing drinks or foods, and kissing.

    Solution

    • There is no treatment for mono. However, vitamins A, E, C and B-complex may help by strengthening the immune system. Most people recover from mono within two to three weeks; however, in some cases it may take months for full recovery.
