Necrotizing Fasciitis Symptoms

Necrotizing fasciitis is a severe bacterial infection that can destroy the muscles, skin and tissue. Often referred to as the flesh eating disease, necrotizing fasciitis can be caused by many different bacterial species, and occasionally even by fungi.
  1. Early Stage

    • The early symptoms usually occur within 24 hours after you become infected. It may begin with flu-like symptoms, extreme thirst and pain. The pain will get worse as the infection progresses.

    Advanced Stage

    • The infected area may begin to swell within 3-4 days. Blisters will appear that are filled with fluid that looks black. Signs of necrosis may begin to appear. The skin may begin to have black, flaky scabs.

    Critical Stage

    • In the advanced stage, the bacteria are releasing toxins that will cause the body to go into toxic shock. Your blood pressure will drop and as the body weakens, you may become unconscious.

    Time Frame

    • Necrotizing fasciitis progresses rapidly. This infection is life-threatening and needs immediate medical attention. Early medical care increases the chance that it can be effectively treated.

    Treatment

    • Treatment for necrotizing fasciitis will include IV antibiotics. Infected tissue will be removed to help eliminate spreading. Medication will be given to counteract the other medical problems that the infection may be causing. If the infection is caused by mixed bacteria, a hyperbaric oxygen chamber may be used.
