Mucinex for a Sinus Infection
-
Ingredients
-
Mucinex contains guaifenesin, an expectorant that is used to loosen mucous in the bronchial passages so that people can cough it up.
Types
-
Two forms of Mucinex that work well in treating sinus problems, Mucinex and Mucinex D, come in pill form. There are also forms of Mucinex in liquid and mini-melt form that are made for children.
Use
-
When using a form of Mucinex, take the drug only while you have sinus infection symptoms, because it works for only a short time. Take Mucinex with food and drink fluids after taking it to help lubricate your throat.
Side Effects
-
Different types of Mucinex can cause some people to experience dizziness, headaches, insomnia, nausea, vomiting, tingling or red skin and/or a skin rash. Those who experience more severe side effects, such as an uneven or fast heartbeat, flu symptoms and/or high blood pressure, should seek medical attention immediately.
Mucinex With Other Medications and Conditions
-
If you are taking other drugs, such as an MAO inhibitor, diet pills or ADHD medications, do not take Mucinex. Avoid taking Mucinex if you have heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes or a thyroid disorder. Women who are pregnant or nursing should consult a physician before using Mucinex.
