Polymyxin Side Effects

Polymyxin B is a prescription medication. It is used to treat several kinds of bacterial infections (including meningitis and eye, blood and urinary tract infections). It is classified as an antibiotic and functions by destroying the bacteria that initially starts the infection. The medicine is administered through injection. There are certain side effects that could arise from taking Polymyxin B.
  1. Common Side Effects

    • The most common side effects of this medication are swelling, pain and redness occurring where it was injected onto the skin. These side effects are usually short-lived. However, if you have these side effects and find them to be persistent, or if they intensify, you should speak with your doctor about it.

    Severe Side Effects

    • Severe side effects of this medication are uncommon, but they can also be extremely serious. Some severe side effects of Polymyxin B include abnormal fever, flushing of the face, shallow or slow breathing, weakness of the muscles, dizziness, changes in the vision, changes in the amount of urine produced (more or less), stiffness of the neck, extreme headache and pink or red urine. If you notice any of these side effects, you should immediately seek emergency medical attention.

    Allergic Reactions

    • Serious allergic reactions to Polymyxin B are unlikely, but possible. If you see any signs of allergic reaction to the medicine, you need to get emergency medical help. Some signs of Polymyxin B allergic reaction include extreme dizziness, having trouble breathing, itching, skin rash and swelling.

    Extended Use

    • If you take Polymyxin B for an extended period of time, you might notice the development of an entirely new fungal or bacterial infection, which is referred to as an "opportunistic infection." Some signs to watch out for include vaginal discharge changes or white patches showing up inside of the mouth. If you see any of these signs, alert your doctor at once.

    Caution

    • When considering using Polymyxin B for the treatment of a bacterial infection, it is important to be cautious. Inform your doctor of your medical history as well as your current medical conditions (if you have any), especially if you have any disorders of the muscles or the nerves (like myasthenia gravis) or kidney disease.
