Clarithromycin is a prescription medication. It is used for the treatment of a vast array of different bacterial infections. It is also often used, alongside other medications, to treat various kinds of stomach ulcers. It is a macrolide antibiotic and functions by stopping bacteria from growing and spreading. There are certain side effects that could potentially arise due to taking Clarithromycin.

    • Users of Clarithromycin frequently experience certain side effects of the medication. These common side effects are discomfort of the stomach, unusual taste, nausea, indigestion, throwing up, diarrhea, and headache. These side effects tend to be minor, but if you find them bothersome or persistent, you need to let your doctor know.

    Serious Side Effects

    • Though significantly less common than minor ones, serious side effects of Clarithromycin also exist. These side effects are possibly harmful, so they need emergency medical help. These side effects include urinating with less frequency, extreme stomachache or stomach cramps, nightmares, hallucinations, extreme diarrhea, bloody stools, disorientation, confusion, depression, mood or emotional changes and having difficulty sleeping.

    Liver Damage

    • Liver damage is a rare side effect of Clarithromycin. If you notice any symptoms of any liver problems, you should immediately consult your physician. Some signs to watch out for are darker colored urine, yellowing of the skin or the eyes, the stools being lighter in color and pain in the upper right of the stomach.

    Rare Side Effects

    • Other rare but serious side effects of Clarithromycin use are seizures, passing out, hypoglycemia (for diabetics), irregular heart rhythm, heart palpitations, anxiety, and bloody or watery diarrhea. All of these side effects call for immediate medical attention.

    Allergic Reactions

    • Allergic reactions are serious Clarithromycin side effects. These reactions are unlikely but can be deadly. If you experience an allergic reaction to the medication, you must get medical assistance as soon as possible. Some symptoms of allergic reaction to the medicine are abnormal swelling (particularly of the throat, lips, or mouth), wheezing, other breathing-related issues, unusual skin rash, itching, and breaking out into hives.
