Side Effects of Paromomycin

Paromomycin (generic name Paromomycin sulfate) is a prescription medicine commonly used to treat intestinal infections and liver-related problems, including liver disease. It is an aminoglycoside antibiotic, which means it interferes with the function of bacterial ribosomes. There are certain side effects that may occur from using Paromomycin.

  1. Common Side Effects

    • Users of Paromomycin frequently experience stomach cramps, nausea, appetite loss, stomachache, stomach burning and diarrhea. These usually tend to be minor side effects, since they generally subside rapidly. However, if you have these side effects and find that they are especially troublesome or long-lasting, tell your doctor.

    Serious Side Effects

    • Serious side effects are relatively rare, but they require emergency medical attention, as they could be harmful. These side effects include greasy stools, bloody urine and pink-colored stools.

    • There are also several very rare and very dangerous possible side effects of Paromomycin use. If you should notice any of these side effects, immediately get emergency medical assistance. These side effects are dizziness, hearing loss, abnormal decrease in amounts of urine, headache, numbness, tingling of the skin, roaring or ringing sounds in the ears, confusion, disorientation, twitching of the muscles and convulsions.

    Allergic Reactions

    • Allergic reactions are also possible serious Paromomycin side effects. Allergic reactions are uncommon, but possibly harmful, and require immediate medical help. Some signs of allergic reaction to Paromomycin include extreme dizziness, having problems breathing, swelling or itching (particularly of the tongue, throat or face) and skin rash.

    Extended Use

    • Women who use Paromomycin for an extended length of time might experience vaginal yeast infections or oral thrush. Some signs of these side effects are vaginal discharge changes and white patches inside of the mouth. Contact your doctor immediately if you notice any of these symptoms.
