Side Effects of Zosyn

Zosyn is a prescription medication used for the treatment of various kinds of bacterial infections. It is administered via injection. The medicine is comprised of two separate drugs, which are tazobactam and piperacillin. Piperacillin is an antibiotic that halts bacteria growth. Tazobactam is a beta-lactamase inhibitor that assists the antibiotic. There are some side effects that could happen from taking Zosyn.
  1. Common Side Effects

    • Some Zosyn side effects are fairly common. Usually minor, these side effects often subside quickly. They are indigestion, agitation, insomnia, throwing up, headache, nausea, diarrhea, constipation and swelling, redness or pain where the medicine was injected. If these side effects do not go away, or if they are bothering you, you should let your physician know.

    Serious Side Effects

    • Some people might also experience more serious side effects of Zosyn, although they are less common. If you notice signs of serious side effects, seek emergency medical attention. These side effects include tremors, hallucinations, bloody stools, blistered, red or swollen skin, tenderness of inflammation of the veins, jaundice, the feet, ankles, or hands becoming swollen, vaginal irritation or discharge, stomachache, extreme diarrhea, throwing up, chills, sore throat, fever, irregular, slow, or rapid heartbeat, urinating less frequently, chest ache, extended relaxation of the muscles, inflammation where the medication was injected, abnormal bleeding or bruising, shortness of breath, abnormal weakness or fatigue and seizures.

    Allergic Reactions

    • Allergic reactions are also severe side effects from Zosyn. When these occur, the patient requires immediate medical assistance. Some signs to look out for are difficulty with breathing, tightness or heaviness of the chest, swelling (mouth, tongue, lips and face), skin rash, itching and hives.

    Caution

    • It is vital to exercise caution when considering taking Zosyn. Notify your doctor of any medicinal allergies you might have (especially toward cephalosporins) and all your medical conditions, particularly cystic fibrosis, blood clotting or bleeding disorders, any allergies, kidney disease or imbalances of electrolytes.

    Overdose

    • If you suspect you might have had an overdose on Zosyn, seek emergency medical care. Some signs of Zosyn overdose are agitation, restlessness, extreme anxiety, nervousness and convulsions.
