Side Effects of Cefzil

Cefzil is a prescription medicine that is used for the treatment of several kinds of bacterial infections. The medication is classified as being a cephalosporin antibiotic. Cefzil functions by completely halting the spreading and growth of bacteria. As with any type of medicine, there are some possible negative side effects that could occur due to taking Cefzil.

  1. Most Common Side Effect

    • The most common side effect of Cefzil is nausea. Many people who take this medication will experience nausea. It is not considered to be a major side effect, as it usually tends to subside as the body adapts to the medicine. However, if the nausea worsens or lingers, it might be necessary to consult your doctor before continuing to take Cefzil.

    Other Common Side Effects

    • There are various other relatively common side effects of taking Cefzil. These include headache, anxiety, nervousness, diarrhea, abdominal ache, disorientation, confusion, problems sleeping, dizziness, yellow skin and eyes, inflammation of the vagina, sleepiness, genital itchiness, skin rash, throwing up, hyperactivity and breaking out into hives.

    Serious Side Effects

    • Cefzil is an antibiotic. There are some serious side effects that have been associated with antibiotics that are similar to Cefzil, such as skin rash with blisters, an extreme allergic reaction known as anaphylaxis or Stevens-Johnson syndrome (a rare illness that involves bleeding and blisters on various parts of the body) and serum sickness (which is characterized by joint pain, fever and itchy skin rash). If you notice any of these symptoms, you must immediately seek emergency medical attention.

    Colitis

    • Sometimes, though rather uncommon, Cefzil can lead to the medical condition colitis, which is a disorder that involves bowel inflammation. The main symptom of this ailment is diarrhea. If you notice this symptom, you should notify your doctor immediately.

    Drug Interactions

    • Drug interactions can happen when more than one medication is taken at the same time. Drug interactions can lead to unpleasant side effects, as well as decreased or increased effectiveness of one or more of the medicines that are involved. Some medicines that can cause possible drug interactions with Cefzil include propantheline, various antibiotics (such as amikacin), probenecid, some diuretics (like furosemide and ethacrynic acid) and oral contraceptives.
