Suprax is the brand name of cephalosporin, which is an antibiotic medication often prescribed to treat bacterial infections affecting the ears, throat, lungs and urinary tract. It is also prescribed in the treatment of mild sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) such as gonorrhea, as well as certain cases of meningitis. Like all medications, Suprax has potential side effects that may require medical attention.-

According to the Mayo Clinic, side effects of Suprax that are considered common but not serious include headache, sensitivity of the mouth or tongue, vaginal itching and discharge, and mild instances of diarrhea and stomach cramping.
Serious Side Effects

Serious side effects include a decrease in urination, decreased appetite, vomiting, irritated eyes, painful joints and blistering or peeling of the skin. Hearing loss has been noted in patients taking Suprax to treat meningitis. A patient experiencing these symptoms should consult with a physician before continuing Suprax doses.

Severe side effects that require immediate medical attention include seizures, chest pain, fever or chills, black stools, difficulty breathing, sores or white spots inside of the mouth, extreme fatigue and unusual bruising or bleeding.
Existing Medical Conditions

According to PDRHealth, before using Suprax, a patient should advise her physician of existing medical conditions or a history of medical incidences such as colitis (including colitis caused by antibiotics), other stomach/intestinal diseases, kidney disease, liver malfunction, bleeding abnormalities or malnutrition. These conditions can directly affect the potency and/or effectiveness of the medication in treating the currently diagnosed illness.
Drug Interactions

Suprax has the potential to adversely interact with blood thinners such as warfarin and anticoagulants such as heparin. A patient should also advise his physician if he consumes alcohol on a regular basis or smokes tobacco products, as these substances can affect the reaction of Suprax on the body.
