Novo Levofloxacin Side Effects

Novo Levofloxacin is a prescription antibiotic that is used to treat certain types of infections of the lungs, sinuses, urinary tract and skin of adults. It may be prescribed for the treatment of bacterial infections of the kidneys, bladder or prostate. Levofloxacin has been used to treat such conditions as pneumonia, bronchitis and even anthrax exposure. Like most prescription drugs, Novo Levofloxacin has some side affects associated with its use.
  1. Serious Side Effects

    • In some cases patients have exhibited allergic reactions to the active ingredients of Novo Levofloxacin. Should a patient experience symptoms such as hives, swelling of the face, tongue or throat, or difficulty breathing he should stop taking the drug and contact his health care provider immediately. Other serious side effects that require medical attention include dizziness, accelerated heartbeat, pain, swelling or numbness in the joints, hands or feet, bloody diarrhea, altered mental state including hallucinations or depression, seizures, altered urination or skin rash.

    Common Side Effects

    • A common side effect of most antibiotics, including Novo Levofloxacin, is diarrhea. Watery or bloody diarrhea may be a sign of a new infection, which should be reported to the patient's health care provider prior to taking any anti-diarrheal medication. Novo Levofloxacin can cause drowsiness or otherwise impair the patient's ability to think or react. Patients should not drive or operate machinery after taking this medication.

    Less Serious Side Effects

    • Reported side effects that may cause discomfort but do not typically require medical attention include upset of the gastro-intestinal tract such as diarrhea, constipation and nausea. Taking Novo Levofloxacin may cause altered mental states including anxiety or feelings of depression or restlessness. Other side effects may include headache or muscle pain, insomnia, itching of the skin, nightmares or vaginal discharge in females.

    Overdose

    • Taking too much of this medication can have serious repercussions and requires medical attention. Symptoms of Novo Levofloxacin overdose may include convulsions, loss of balance, sweating, trouble breathing, loss of coordination and general weakness.

    Sunlight

    • Novo Levofloxacin can increase the skin's sensitivity to the effects of light, therefore patients should take appropriate precautions. Patients taking this medication should not use tanning beds or sunbathe. Patients should wear protective clothing, including a hat and sunglasses. Sunscreen with at least an SPF of 15 or higher should be applied to exposed skin. Severe sunburns should be reported to the patient's health care provider.
