Cloxacillin Side Effects

Cloxacillin is an antibiotic that can be used to treat staph infections and may be prescribed for an ear, respiratory, urinary tract or throat infection. Cloxacillin is a useful medication that can also cause some side effects of varying severity.

  1. Side Effects

    • Diarrhea, nausea, changes in appetite, anxiety, vomiting, a rash or hives, colitis, confusion and jaundice are all side effects of Cloxacillin.

    Oral Contraceptives

    • Cloxacillin, like many antibiotics, may reduce the effectiveness of oral contraceptives. It is recommended that women taking birth control use a backup contraceptive method while taking Cloxacillin.

    Allergic Reactions

    • Those allergic to penicillin or cephalosporin antibiotics should not take Cloxacillin. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include swelling of the throat, lips and tongue, trouble breathing and hives. If you experience these side effects, seek medical attention.

    Special Populations

    • Individuals with cystic fibrosis may be more vulnerable to the side effects caused by Cloxacillin than others. Cloxacillin may cause tooth discoloration in children. Women taking Cloxacillin should not nurse infants.

    Serious Side Effects

    • Rash, fever, itching, sores on the genitals, joint pain and swollen lymph nodes can also indicate a serious reaction to Cloxacillin. Those experiencing these side effects should stop taking Cloxacillin and seek medical attention.

    Other Considerations

    • Cloxacillin may cause vitamin deficiencies, so people taking this antibiotic should also be sure to take a multivitamin.
