Symptoms of Yeast Infections in Toddlers
-
Thrush
-
Thrush is a form of a yeast infection. It usually appears in the mouth. Look for white spots inside of your toddler's mouth, especially on his tongue. The spots can also appear on the inside of the cheeks. The spots can bleed if they are scraped. Your toddler will usually show signs of a sore throat. She may also have difficulty swallowing.
Diaper Rash
-
Diaper rash is one of the many symptoms of a yeast infection. Look for little red blisters in your toddler's diaper region. Diapers can hold in moisture which can cause too much yeast to grow. This can become even worse in the summer months or in warm, humid weather. Suspect a yeast infection if you have been treating the diaper rash with a zinc oxide ointment for more than 72 hours.
Antibiotics
-
Current or recent antibiotic use can also be a sign of a yeast infection. Antibiotics often cause yeast infections because they kill bad bacteria along with the good. They drastically reduce the amount of bacteria in the skin that fight infections. This is what causes an overgrowth of yeast in the body or on the skin. Do not stop using the antibiotics if you see symptoms of a yeast infection. Contact your doctor.
Genital Area
-
Look for yellow or white discharge coming from the vagina. Your toddler may also have excessive itching in her vaginal area. She may get upset or act like she is pain when she has to urinate. Look for a red rash on the underside of the penis. It will be painful to the touch. Also watch for scaling on the underside of the penis.
Skin
-
A yeast infection can also appear on the skin or in the navel. Look for a rash on the skin that is red in color. It can also appear as pimples. Look for red patches that ooze clear fluid. Watch your toddler carefully to see if he seems itchy. A yeast infection on the skin will be itchy. It can also cause a burning sensation on the skin.
