What Is Elimite Cream?

Elimite is a medicinal cream used to rid the body of mites. While Elimite is the brand name of the prescription medication used to cure scabies, the more-often used generic version of Elimite is Permethrin cream. Elimite cream is simple to use and is proven to be very effective at eliminating scabies.
  1. Scabies

    • Scabies is an irritating skin condition caused by microscopic mites that burrow into a person's skin and lay eggs, leading to an infestation that can extend across the entire body. An intense, constant itching first appears around the wrists, palms and between the fingers. A red rash may appear. Itching increases at night or after a hot shower or bath. Scabies is extremely contagious and often originates in small children before spreading to adults.

    Usage

    • Exact directions for how to properly use Elimite cream can be found on the label. The cream must be rubbed on the skin of the entire body (from the head to the bottoms of the feet) to be effective. A bath or shower can be taken after eight to 14 hours to remove the medicine from the skin. If itching remains after two weeks, consult a doctor.

    Additional Measures

    • In addition to using Elimite, it is necessary to wash all clothes, bed sheets and blankets in the household in order to get rid of any mites that may be remaining outside of the body. Rugs and carpets should also be vacuumed. Having other persons living in the household use the cream should be discussed with the doctor.

    Safety Information

    • It is important to remember that Elimite cream is for external use only. It should not come into contact with the eyes or the insides of the mouth, nose or genital area. The cream should not be used by pregnant women, babies under 2 months old or people who are allergic to certain substances. The patient should inform the doctor of any medication or herbal supplements that he may currently be taking.

    Possible Side Effects

    • Because Elimite cream is only absorbed by the surface of the skin, side effects and other negative health reactions do not normally occur. If mild side effects of itching, redness, swelling or mild burning appear, a doctor should be notified. Severe allergic reactions to Elimite cream may include rash, hives, breathing problems and intense swelling. If these symptoms appear, seek a doctor's advice immediately.

    Incorrect Usage

    • If swallowed, dizziness, headaches, seizures, vomiting and weakness or loss of consciousness could occur. If Elimite cream is taken internally, call the American Association of Poison Control Centers at (800) 222-1222 or seek the immediate help of a hospital emergency room.
