Nail Fungus Symptoms
-
Main Symptoms
-
According to the Mayo clinic, common nail-fungus symptoms include discoloration, brittleness, thickening of the nail and distortion of the shape of the nail.
Additional Symptoms
-
Fungal infection may also cause an unpleasant odor, pain in the affected area and even separation of the nail from the skin.
Identification
-
Doctors diagnose nail fungus by sight and by removing a small sample of skin cells (from beneath the affected nail) for laboratory testing.
Treatment
-
Treatment typically consists of oral anti-fungal medicines, such as fluconazole. Topical creams may be used as well.
Considerations
-
One nail or many nails may be affected by the fungus. These infections can sometimes be prevented by keeping nails clean and dry.
