What Is Walking Pneumonia?

Walking pneumonia, also called atypical pneumonia, refers to a mild case of pneumonia that may not cause severe symptoms and allows a person to continue typical daily activities, such as walking.

Unlike typical bacterial pneumonia, walking pneumonia is often caused by atypical bacteria or viruses. It is usually less severe and does not require hospitalization in most cases.

Causes

The most common cause of walking pneumonia is a bacteria called *Mycoplasma pneumoniae*. Other less common causes include:

- *Chlamydophila pneumoniae*

- Viruses, including influenza, parainfluenza, adenovirus, and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV)

Symptoms:

- Mild fever

- Dry cough that may worsen over time

- Fatigue

- Muscle aches

- Headache

- Sore throat

- Mild shortness of breath

Walking pneumonia can sometimes lead to more serious complications including:**

- Pneumonia (inflammation of the lungs)

- Pleuritis (inflammation of the pleural space surrounding the lungs)

- Pericarditis (inflammation of the sac around the heart)

Treatment:

- Rest

- Fluids

- Over-the-counter pain relievers

- Antibiotics (if bacterial infection)

Prevention:

- Practice good hygiene, including washing hands frequently

- Avoid close contact with people who are sick

- Cover your mouth and nose when sneezing or coughing

- Get vaccinated against influenza, pneumonia, and other respiratory illnesses as recommended.
