Topical treatments

* Permethrin 5% cream (Elimite) is applied to the skin for 8-14 hours. It is usually repeated 7 days later.

* Lindane 1% lotion or cream (Kwell) is applied to the skin for 8-12 hours. It is not recommended for use in pregnant or breastfeeding women, infants under 2 months of age, or people with a history of seizures.

Oral treatments

* Ivermectin (Stromectol) is a single-dose oral medication that is used to treat scabies in people who are unable to use topical treatments.

* Crotamiton 10% cream (Eurax) is applied to the skin for 24 hours. It is usually repeated 3-7 days later.

Additional measures

* Wash all bedding and clothing in hot water (at least 122 degrees Fahrenheit) and dry on high heat.

* Clean all furniture and surfaces that the infected person has come in contact with.

* Avoid close contact with other people until the scabies is treated and gone.

Treatment for Crusted Scabies

Crusted scabies requires more aggressive treatment. Your doctor may prescribe one or more of the following:

* More potent topical medications

* Oral ivermectin

* Oral corticosteroids to help relieve inflammation and itching

* Antibiotics to treat any secondary bacterial infections

Preventing the Spread of Scabies

Scabies is highly contagious, so it's important to take steps to prevent its spread.

Here are a few tips:

* Avoid close contact with people who have scabies, including sharing clothing or bedding.

* Wash your hands frequently with soap and water.

* Treat all household members and close contacts who have been exposed to scabies, even if they don't have symptoms.
