How did cholera epidemic start?

The origins of cholera can be traced back to the Indian subcontinent, where the bacterium Vibrio cholerae is thought to have evolved. The first recorded cholera pandemic occurred in Bengal in 1817 and spread throughout Southeast Asia. In the 19th century, cholera pandemics spread to other parts of the world, including Europe, Africa, and the Americas, through trade and travel routes. The spread of cholera was facilitated by poor sanitation and hygiene conditions, which allowed the bacterium to thrive and spread easily through contaminated water and food. This initial cholera pandemic lasted until 1824. Since then, there have been six more cholera pandemics.
