What to do if you scab gets an infection?

Signs and symptoms of an infected scab

- Increased pain, swelling, warmth and redness around the scab

- Pus or other drainage from the scab

- Fever and chills

- Feeling fatigued

- Red streaks leading from the scab

How to treat an infected scab

- Wash your hands before and after touching the infected area.

- Clean the scab gently with soap and water.

- Let air circulate around the area.

- Apply an antibiotic ointment to the scab.

- Cover the scab with a bandage.

- Raise the injured area to reduce swelling.

- Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids.

- Take pain relievers such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen to reduce pain and inflammation.

When to see a doctor

- The infection does not improve after 24-48 hours or worsens.

- The area around the scab is red, swollen and painful to the touch.

- You have a fever or chills.
