What is trail fever?
Trail fever is a colloquial term for anaplasmosis, a tick-borne bacterial infection caused by the bacteria Anaplasma phagocytophilum. It is common in cattle, but can also affect other mammals, including horses, sheep, goats, and humans. Symptoms of anaplasmosis can include fever, weakness, loss of appetite, weight loss, and decreased milk production in cattle. In severe cases, anaplasmosis can lead to anemia, jaundice, and even death. Treatment typically involves antibiotics and supportive care. Prevention involves avoiding areas where ticks are present, using insect repellents, and wearing protective clothing.
