What is Keratoconjunctivitis?
Keratoconjunctivitis is an inflammation of the cornea (the transparent outer layer of the eye) and the conjunctiva (the thin membrane that covers the white of the eye). It can be caused by a variety of factors, including:
* Infections: Keratoconjunctivitis can be caused by bacteria, viruses, or fungi.
* Allergies: Keratoconjunctivitis can be caused by allergens such as pollen, dust, or pet dander.
* Irritants: Keratoconjunctivitis can be caused by irritants such as smoke, chemicals, or fumes.
* Dry eye: Keratoconjunctivitis can be caused by dry eye, a condition in which the eyes do not produce enough tears.
* Autoimmune diseases: Keratoconjunctivitis can be caused by autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis or lupus.
Symptoms of keratoconjunctivitis can include:
* Redness
* Swelling
* Itching
* Burning
* Pain
* Blurred vision
* Tearing
* Sensitivity to light
Treatment for keratoconjunctivitis depends on the cause. Bacterial infections are treated with antibiotic eye drops or ointments. Viral infections usually do not require treatment, but supportive measures such as artificial tears can help to relieve symptoms. Allergic keratoconjunctivitis can be treated with antihistamine eye drops or oral medications. Irritant-induced keratoconjunctivitis can be treated by avoiding the irritant and using artificial tears. Dry eye-related keratoconjunctivitis can be treated with artificial tears or other medications that help to increase tear production. Autoimmune-related keratoconjunctivitis is treated with medications that suppress the immune system.
Keratoconjunctivitis is usually a mild condition that resolves with treatment. However, it can sometimes lead to serious complications, such as corneal scarring or vision loss.
