Recovery Time from Meningitis
Meningitis is caused by bacteria or viruses that infect the tissues or fluid surrounding the brain and spinal cord. Viral meningitis is fairly common, and in most cases does not cause serious illness. Bacterial meningitis is not as common, but is very serious. Treatment needs to be sought immediately to prevent brain damage and death.-
Treatment
-
The treatment depends on the cause. Bacterial meningitis is treated in the hospital to prevent problems like hearing loss, seizures and brain damage. Viral meningitis is treated at home with most people getting better in about two weeks.
Recovery
-
Recovery, like treatment, depends on the type of meningitis. People with mild cases of viral meningitis can usually recover at home within two weeks. Although some people may feel tired and light-headed for a few months. Bacterial meningitis symptoms usually last for two to three weeks, and the person is in the hospital. Recovery depends on the severity of complications.
Symptoms
-
Symptoms include stiff neck, fever, headache, seizures and vomiting. Babies may be cranky, have a rash and refuse to be held. Young children may seem like they have the flu, while older adults may have a headache and fever.
Prevention
-
Preventing meningitis can be done by getting vaccinated against several of the organisms that cause the disease. Included are the chicken pox, MMR (measles, mumps and rubella) and Hib (Haemophilus influenzae type b) vaccine.
Important Considerations
-
It is important to see a doctor immediately if experiencing symptoms of meningitis. Only a doctor can determine whether it is viral or bacterial meningitis. Diagnosis is made with a lumbar puncture, where fluid is removed from the spine and tested for illness-causing organisms.
