How to Kill MRSA in the Air

MRSA is Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus. It is a strain of staph infections that has become resistant to many antibiotics and makes treatment challenging for a health care team. MRSA is usually only spread by contact, but rarely, a patient will develop a respiratory infection of MRSA. When someone has a MRSA infection anywhere in their respiratory tract, they spread the infection through droplets that are coughed out into the air around them. There are several steps to take to kill MRSA in the air.

  1. How to Kill MRSA in the Air

    • 1

Wear personal protective equipment when going into an area in which someone is infected with respiratory MRSA. This includes a face mask, gloves, and a gown to prevent infecting yourself with this illness.

    • 2

Spray Lysol Disinfecting Aerosol Spray into the air in the room that is contaminated with MRSA to kill any spores that may be in the air. During cases of respiratory MRSA, the spores are deposited into the air by coughing of the infected person. These droplets do not remain suspended in the air, but drop out of the air onto surfaces around them up to six feet away. Allow Lysol to settle.

    • 3

Make a solution of 1 tablespoon of Clorox to 1 quart of water. Use paper towels to wipe this solution on all hard surfaces in the area that someone infected with respiratory MRSA has been. Immediately dispose of paper towels in a trash can.

    • 4

When finished cleaning, remove and throw away all personal protective equipment and wash your hands with soap and warm water for at least 45 seconds.

    • 5

Clean infected areas several times per day to decrease MRSA spores in the air and on surfaces.
