Laser Nail Fungus Treatment

Toenail fungus infections affect roughly 20 million Americans, according to the Foot and Ankle Center of Washington. There is no definite cure for these infections but laser treatment may help.

  1. The Process

    • Lasers can be used to kill fungus while leaving the surrounding tissue unharmed. Small studies of this treatment's use have shown positive results, according to the Foot and Ankle Center.

    Side Effects

    • The laser used in toenail fungus treatment doesn't affect surrounding tissue, so there is no pain. No side effects, adverse reactions or complications have been recorded, according to the Foot and Ankle Center.

    Noveon Laser

    • The Noveon laser uses light at two different wavelengths to hone in on the fungus. This type of laser is also used in hair removal, dental work and cataract surgery.

    Patholase Laser

    • Patholase has also developed a laser for treatment of toenail fungus, but "The New York Times" questioned the FDA's approval of the laser in March of 2009.

    Cost

    • Insurance companies see toenail fungus treatment as aesthetic and will not cover laser treatment. Laser treatment usually costs between $600 and $1,200.
